Stories & Legends

Midnight Arrival in a Prison Cell

Kamsa imprisoned his own sister Devaki because prophecy said her eighth child would kill him. Six infants perished by his hand. At midnight on the eighth birth, the chains loosened themselves, guards fell asleep, and the newborn — dark as monsoon clouds — was carried across the flooding Yamuna to Gokul, swapped with Yashoda's daughter. Kamsa seized the girl-child, who slipped skyward laughing: "Your slayer is already born and living elsewhere."

Bhagavata Purana, Canto 10

The Butter Thief of Vrindavan

Little Krishna's mischief had one flavour — maakhan. He'd stack playmates into pyramids to raid butter pots hanging from rafters, smear his face with cream, and flash a smile that dissolved every complaint. When Yashoda once tried to bind him with a rope, it always fell two fingers short — however much she joined cords. That shortfall is the teaching: the Infinite can be bound only by love, never by rope.

Bhagavata Purana, Canto 10

Kaliya — Dancing on the Serpent's Hoods

A venomous serpent had poisoned the Yamuna; cattle died at its banks. Krishna leapt from a kadamba tree straight into the black water. Kaliya coiled around him; villagers wept on the shore. Then the boy's body swelled like the universe itself — he broke free, danced upon the serpent's heads, and spared his life for the promise to flee forever, sparing even a poison-carrier who surrendered.

Bhagavata Purana, Canto 10

Govardhan Lifted on One Finger

When Indra unleashed torrential storms to humble the cowherds, Krishna — barely seven — lifted Mount Govardhan with his little finger and held it aloft for seven days like an umbrella, sheltering every villager, cow and calf beneath. Indra's pride drowned in his own rain; the boy taught that nature is honoured through protection, not appeasement.

Bhagavata Purana, Canto 10

Sudama — The Fistful of Rice

His childhood friend Sudama arrived at golden Dwarka in rags, carrying a humble bundle of flattened rice — too ashamed to even ask for help. Krishna ran barefoot to embrace him, washed his feet, and snatched the bundle, devouring handfuls as if tasting nectar. Sudama left empty-handed yet found his hut transformed into a palace — for the Lord gives what love deserves before it is asked.

Bhagavata Purana, Canto 10

The Charioteer of Kurukshetra

Arjuna chose Krishna alone — weaponless — over his entire army. On the battlefield, seeing grandfathers and gurus arrayed against him, Arjuna collapsed in despair. Then came the Bhagavad Gita: 700 verses on duty without attachment, the deathless self, and surrender. "Karmanye vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana" — act, release the fruits. The charioteer steered no horses; he steered a civilization.
