Stories & Legends
Breaking the Bow of Shiva
King Janaka vowed Sita would wed only the man who could string Shiva's mighty bow — failed by armies of kings. Young Rama approached, and as he rested a hand on it, the bow snapped like a twig with thunder heard across worlds. The divine wedding followed: four princes married four princesses in one auspicious ceremony at Mithila.
— Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda
Fourteen Years — Without a Complaint
On the eve of his coronation, Kaikeyi invoked two boons: her son Bharata crowned, Rama exiled for fourteen years. Rama received the news with a serene smile, donned bark-cloth before his father could protest, and left the palace at dawn. Lakshmana followed; Sita declared, "Forest, father-in-law's home or heaven — where my Lord goes, that is Ayodhya for me." Dharma kept even when it costs everything.
— Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda
Shabari's Half-Eaten Berries
The elderly ascetic Shabari had waited years for Rama, tasting each wild berry first to offer only the sweetest — discarding the bitter ones she could not bear him to taste. The sages gasped at 'impure' offerings. Rama devoured them lovingly: "Anything offered with a pure heart, I accept." Devotion's quality is measured by intention, never by etiquette.
— Ramcharitmanas, Aranya Kanda
Jatayu's Last Flight
As Ravana's flying chariot carried away the crying Sita, the ancient vulture Jatayu attacked — wings clipped, talons shattered, falling to earth still fighting. Rama found the dying bird, cradled him like his own father, and granted him liberation with funeral rites no king receives. Even one act of courage in another's crisis earns divine honour.
— Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda
Stones That Floated to Lanka
The ocean refused passage until appeased. Then began the miracle of faith: stones inscribed with Rama's name floated when placed on water — monkeys and bears hauling boulders, squirrels rolling pebbles, Nala-Neela engineering the bridge. Five days of collective devotion built Rama Setu across the sea. The smallest squirrel's stripes are said to be Rama's caressing fingers.
— Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda
Bharata's Fourteen Years on a Grass Mat
Refusing a throne gained by his mother's scheme, Bharata placed Rama's wooden sandals on the throne and ruled from Nandigrama village — hair matted, eating roots, sleeping on grass — administering an empire as its humble caretaker. When Rama returned, the kingdom had flourished precisely because power was held as trusteeship, not possession.
— Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda
