Stories & Legends
The Saint Who Left a Train
Legend says he was travelling without a ticket when the conductor put him off the train at Neeb Karori village. The train, it is told, would not move — no effort of the engine could budge it. Only when the saint was brought back aboard did it proceed. From this incident came the name by which millions know him.
— Oral tradition
Kainchi Ashram
In 1964, Maharaj-ji established the Kainchi ashram in a mountain gorge near Nainital. It became a magnet for seekers from every walk of life — villagers, soldiers, scientists and later seekers from the West. Today thousands gather there every June for the annual bhandara in his memory.
The Western Connection
Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), after being dismissed from Harvard, met Maharaj-ji in India in 1967 and found his life's direction. Decades later, Steve Jobs visited Kainchi during his own search, and years after that recommended the place to Mark Zuckerberg — stories that carried Maharaj-ji's presence across the world.
Symbolism Decoded
🔱 The Plaid Blanket
Warmth given to all equally — kings and villagers sat beneath the same wool.
🔱 The Feedings (Bhandara)
God is served by feeding people; no one left his presence hungry.
🔱 Silence and Smiles
Teaching without lectures — love transmitted directly, beyond words.
Forms & Manifestations
The Blanket-Wrapped Sadhu
His iconic image: wrapped in a plaid blanket, often with a slight smile — presence over posture.
Hanuman's Devotee
A lifelong devotee of Hanuman; every major ashram houses a Hanuman temple he had established.
Sacred Texts & Mantras
Maharaj-ji's Core Teaching
सबसे प्रेम करो, सबकी सेवा करो, राम का स्मरण करो
Love everyone, serve everyone, remember God (Ram)
The three-part instruction he gave again and again. For him, 'Ram' was less a name than the ever-present reality behind all names.
How to Worship
Simple daily puja
Sit quietly before his image. Offer flowers or fruit if available. Repeat 'Ram' — aloud or within. Close with a moment of silent gratitude and one small act of service for someone that day.
Traditional offerings
- Flowers and fruit
- Halwa or prasad distributed to others
- Blankets donated to the poor in winter
- Feeding monkeys, cows, dogs — any living being
About vrat (fasting): Devotees often observe Thursdays with seva (service) rather than fasting — service itself is the observance.
